The China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, was founded in the spring of 1957 and is held in Guangzhou every spring and autumn. It is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and the Guangdong Provincial Peoples Government, and organized by the China Foreign Trade Center. It is currently the longest, largest, most comprehensive international trade event in China, with the largest variety of goods, the largest number of buyers attending, the widest distribution of countries and regions, the best transaction results, and the best reputation.

The Canton Fair has gone through 61 years of reform, innovation, and development, and has never stopped facing various severe tests. It has strengthened Chinas trade relations with the world, showcased Chinas image and development achievements, and is a high-quality platform for Chinese enterprises to explore international markets. It is also a guiding demonstration base for implementing Chinas foreign trade development strategy. It has become the first platform for promoting Chinas foreign trade, known as the barometer and indicator of Chinas foreign trade, and a window, epitome, and symbol of Chinas opening up to the outside world.

As of the 123rd session, the Canton Fair has accumulated export transactions of approximately 1323.7 billion US dollars and attracted approximately 8.42 million overseas buyers. At present, the exhibition scale of each Canton Fair reaches 1.185 million square meters, with nearly 25000 domestic and foreign exhibitors, and about 200000 overseas buyers from more than 210 countries and regions attending.

On the occasion of the opening of the 120th Canton Fair in October 2016, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, President of the Peoples Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi Jinping, sent a congratulatory letter. Li Keqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, issued an instruction to express congratulations, fully affirming the important position and positive contribution of the Canton Fair in Chinas reform and opening up and economic and social development, pointing out the work focus and direction of the Canton Fair in the new era, which is of great significance for the Canton Fair to further expand its opening up to the outside world, cultivate new advantages in foreign trade competition, accelerate the construction of a strong.
